EE Projects

The Energy Efficiency projects will evolve during the course of the program according to the main program activities as they have been proposed during the program preparation.

Funding

The financing for the overall program is provided through funding (loan) via German-Egyptian Cooperation. In this aspect, KFW on behalf of the German Government acts as development financing partner of the program in a contractual relationship with the Central Bank of Egypt and SCU. A loan of 21 Mio. EUR shall be used for:

  • Planning, procurement and installation of EE items for 18 universities
  • Project-related renovation & modernization measures
  • 2-3 “Lighthouse projects” as “showcase buildings” to increase visibility of EE measures in public buildings.

Distribution of Funds

The funds will be distributed to the participating public Universities based on the size of the University according to the number of students.

Expected Results

The expected results from the implementation of the projects of the participating universities are:

  • The energy consumption related to the investment measures to be reduced by 15%.
  • The electricity consumption to be decrease by at least 25,000 MWh/a.
  • The CO2 emissions to be decreased by at least 10.000 t CO2/a.

Measures eligible for Funding

Measures

Specifically the main measures considered to be implemented are the following:

  • Lighting retrofit using energy efficient technologies (e.g. LED)
  • Lighting controls
  • Outdoor campus lighting
  • Energy efficient air conditioning (AC)
  • Energy management system for AC
  • PV roof top system (grid-tied)
  • Solar water heating system
  • Shading
  • Insulation
  • Window film
  • Nano-painting
